For mother of two and Acquisitions Business Manager, Vanessa Sorenson, being able to combine the dual demanding roles of mother and professional is one of the many attractions of working at Gen-i.
Now in a senior role, Vanessa is proof not only that Gen-i supports career development but that it does so for people at all levels of the organisation.
"To go from a procurement phone salesperson to new Business Manager has been about the investment Gen-i has put into my career to extend my thinking and potential."
Flexible working fits shared values
"Being able to work from home if required is excellent, and in fact having the technology to be able to work anywhere is exceptional."
Vanessa finds the job flexibility enabled by the latest technology another plus, and believes this reflects the values she shares with the company.
"Gen-i really does care about its people and its clients. Our commitment to having the client at the heart of what we do, and bringing innovation and solutions to them and seeing the difference we make – it's very exciting."
A few years ago when Matt House was making in-roads into the burgeoning New Zealand IT market for his former employer, he had little idea of where his career was about to take him. Now, after earning a reward trip to Lankawi and when he is looking forward to his second, to Chiang Mai, he's aware of how much his life has changed since Gen-i bought the business he was working in and gave him a role.
As a Business Solution Specialist, Matt works at the coal face with Gen-i clients to identify best-fit solutions for their needs and then collaborate with Gen-i technical experts to bring it to life.
Turning dreams into reality
"I get to work with an amazing range of people with an amazing range of skills who inspire and enable me to deliver business transformational outcomes to my clients. The excitement of seeing a “good idea” become a reality in a business context is what keeps me going."
Matt is hungry for exposure to and training in the "disruptive technologies" that are coming down the line
"Training opportunities at Gen-i are superb for those who choose to actively pursue them," he says. "I have benefitted from the Gen-i Sales Academy programme, which is recognised internationally, and have been able to extend this with Gen-i's leadership development programme. Through this I earned a postgraduate qualification from the University of Waikato."
"I’m also able to attend a wide variety of industry training and certification courses from the likes of HP, Microsoft, IBM, Amazon, Juniper, Cisco, EMC, Oracle, Symantec, VMware and others, and I’m looking forward to completing my ITIL certification in 2013."
It's a busy life but Matt adds that Gen-i's flexible working policy allows him to spend time with his young family.
"There is certainly plenty of challenging work to be done, but also plenty of support to deliver results with work/life balance."
"I enjoy being part of a New Zealand company that is helping to shape the future of this country. The work I do every day delivers results that I can see and that my clients value. This sort of job satisfaction makes Gen-i an amazing place to work."
Being part of a large, competitive organisation was important to Troy Manning, so when the chance came to join Telecom in 2004 and then move to Gen-i in 2007 he jumped at it.
"Being the Operations Manager for our Trans-Tasman business now gives me the opportunity to be more client-facing and to forge relationships," he says.
"I love working with people, especially a management team that allows you to get on and deliver. What inspires me is the prospect of the things I do today having a significant impact on the way we do things in the future."
Troy believes Gen-i values its people and says that those who "put in the hard yards will be successful." He advises anyone considering a career at Gen-i to seize the opportunity to "be your best".
It's hardly surprising that white water kayaker and mountain biker Ling Hou looks for challenges in his job too. As a Business Manager for Security at Gen-i, he gets plenty of those.
"It's an interesting job that broadens my horizons and challenges me. I continuously learn new things, such as how to do due diligence during an acquisition or, when I attend an industry or vendor conference, what similar service providers are doing."
Shaping the future of security
Ling was previously a contractor in digital security and online solutions in Europe and with Gen-i. Gen-i, he says, enables him to maintain a work/life balance that fits with his role as a father – and from time to time enables him to enjoy the New Zealand outdoors.
Ling also enjoys the diversity of his role and the amount of ownership it affords him in the end result.
"I have the ability to shape the future of security products – by being involved in the product lifecycle from start to finish – that meet diverse client requirements across many segments and verticals."
He says it's the people, however, that are the best thing about working at Gen-i. To those considering joining, Ling recommends: "Know what you want to do and where you want to go, then match that to the right part of Gen-i and the right job."
